A continuación nuestras reflexiones:

No ho sabem.

Maybe it's just the time of the year, but there's been a lot of interest recently in whether there will be a PodCamp Barcelona 2011.

So here's our thoughts on the subject:

When we began PodCamp Barcelona in 2008 it was primarily because we were doing podcasting and thought it would be really interesting to go to such an event. As we couldn't find any close enough to get to, we decided to do it ourselves. At that time there were very few events around the so-called "new media", "web 2.0" or "social media" but now there are plenty of them.

There is a tendancy to do events "porque toca" (because it's now a ritual) which is something we profoundly disagree with. If there's nothing new or interesting to do or say, if it just the same format and speakers refritos we don't see the point. In the light of the #acampadas, the occupations and reuse of public space in Spain and other places this year, we feel that a PodCamp is pretty redundant.

We recognise that events are important to communities and one of the initial aims of PodCamp Barcelona (along with the Barcelona Social Media Café) was to create community. However as the use of social media and "web 2.0" tools has spread, peeps have become more focussed on specific communities such as journalists, food & wine, open data, open gov, marketing etc.

That each PodCamp Barcelona was different is something we are proud of. It would have been easy, and frankly boring, to repeat the same event every year – but we were lucky that peeps were inspired and added considerably to the mix. The spontaneous contribution by @Moof of @PBCNTweetlation in 2009 and the subsequent development of it in 2010 by @Moof and @pdavenne is a brilliant example which gave a new dimension. Last year we added workshops and cut down on presentations which led in part to the development of a new iteration of Kfé Innovación which is now spreading around the world.

The other thing is that we no longer live in or near to Barcelona. Right now we're off in northern Europe sorting out our next destination. Does this mean we'll never do another PodCamp Barcelona? We don't know. Does it mean we'll never do anything else in Barcelona? We doubt that. But we won't be doing PodCamp Barcelona 2011.

So thanks to everybody who has been asking, and thanks to everyone who has participated in PodCamp Barcelona since 2008. It's the participants who make any event a success and if people have been asking about PodCamp Barcelona 2011, then we think we can qualify it as that

Well it's hot and sticky in Barcelona & while the country is closed, we're busy preparing PodCamp Barcelona 2010 – the post below is cross-posted from the PodCamp Barcelona site:

PodCamp Barcelona 2010 will take place in El Masnou from September 13 to September 18th. Yes, that's right, five days of PodCamp Barcelona — because this year we have a new venue, a new format and a theme: community. PodCamp Barcelona has always been about community — in fact, the original idea of the event was to create a community out of the various people and projects using what could loosely be termed "web 2.0". But this year, the theme is going to be more explicit and for this reason we have decided to change the format.

So what's going to happen in El Masnou from September 13 to September 18?

From Monday, September 13 to Thursday, September 16 there will be workshops every evening. The idea of these workshops is to give back to the people of Masnou through our knowledge. If you want to run a workshop at PodCamp Barcelona, please contact us.

Friday and Saturday will be different however. Friday evening will see two sessions and a wine tasting. Saturday will have four sessions in the morning and after lunch, a sobremesa where each table will be able to discuss, provide ideas and conclusions about each of the six community sessions. The idea is to get everybody to participate whether they are presenting or not, and to crowd source ideas to further develop the six communities presented. Of course, there will be another winetasting after the sobremesa session, and possibly a concert by musicians who use social media in their work. If you wish to lead a community session please contact us.

The conclusions from the community sessions will be filmed and put on the TalkingAbout platform where the debate can continue.

There will also be a Speaker's Corner where anybody will be able to present any project they want. The presentations at Speaker's Corner will also be filmed and posted online. If you want to present in Speaker's Corner please contact us.

All of this will take place as in a brand new building in El Masnou, Els Vienesos, gracias once again to the fantastic participation of El Masnou council in PodCamp Barcelona. We hope that PodCamp Barcelona 2010 will enable more people to participate in the debate and lead to practical conclusions for ongoing community activity.

Oh yes, and one more thing: this year there are two new members in the PodCamp Barcelona team – welcome aboard @pdavenne and @moof Bring it on!

So it's pretty late and I'm thinking and watching the world go by on twitter and for some reason PodCamp Barcelona comes to mind. And I've got this idea that all of these incredibly talented, smart, creative, knowledgeable people coming together and sharing is great and that we are creating knowledge and social value with our peers, but it occurs to me that we should take it further. We still have to take an "official" decision about PodCamp Barcelona 2010, but as Cataspanglish we know we want to hold it in El Masnou. So what I'm thinking is that we should give back to the citizens of Masnou who have supported the PodCamp for two years. If all the people who participate in PodCamp are willing I would like to do some concrete things leading up the event itself, Birmingham style Social Media Surgeries, Podcasting workshops, mashup sessions, whatever. Let's share the knowledge and skills we have with the people who are giving us the opportunity to get together – what do you think? Are you in for giving back?

As there wasn't one in Spain we decided to hold one one ourselves and so PodCamp Barcelona, the first PodCamp in the south of Europe, as well as the first trilingual PodCamp anywhere was born. After contacting various spaces to hold the event under the right conditions (free entry, free wifi), our peep Alex suggested we approach the council of El Masnou. Fortunately they saw potential in the project and we developed it with them, working alongside the Councillor for New Technologies Ernest Suñé and his team. The response was fantastic, both from the local emerging social media scene as well as internationally known podcasters & bloggers.
About the P2P Foundation (from the P2P Foundation wiki)

We function as a clearinghouse for open/free, participatory/p2p and commons-oriented initiatives.

We aim to be a pluralist network to document, research, and promote peer to peer alternatives. Our political aims could be summarized under the following maxims:

ending the destruction of the biosphere by abandoning the dangerous conceptions of pseudo-abundance in the natural world (i.e. based on the assumption that natural resources are infinite);

promoting free cultural exchange by abandoning the innovation-inhibiting conceptions of pseudo-scarcity in the cultural world (i.e. based on the assumption that the free flow of culture needs to be restricted through excessive copyrights etc…).

<itunes:summary>I met Michel Bauwens, the founder of the P2P Foundation, at UrbanLabs which took place at Citilab in Cornellà, Barcelona. He kindly agreed to record an interview for the PodCamp Barcelona Podcast, but due to his hectic schedule it was impossible to do until recently. I finally caught up with Michel when he was in Amsterdam and we recorded this conversation over Skype from his hotel room. I think the recording provides a very good introduction to the work of the P2P Foundation and Michel's vision.

About the P2P Foundation (from the P2P Foundation wiki)
We function as a clearinghouse for open/free, participatory/p2p and commons-oriented initiatives.

We aim to be a pluralist network to document, research, and promote peer to peer alternatives. Our political aims could be summarized under the following maxims:

	ending the destruction of the biosphere by abandoning the dangerous conceptions of pseudo-abundance in the natural world (i.e. based on the assumption that natural resources are infinite);
promoting free cultural exchange by abandoning the innovation-inhibiting conceptions of pseudo-scarcity in the cultural world (i.e. based on the assumption that the free flow of culture needs to be restricted through excessive copyrights etc...).

Vam preguntar si estaven utilitzant MAC o PC i tots els que van respondre estaven utilitzant PC.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

The 8th Parliamentary Day of Audio-Visual Communication Media of the Parliament of Catalonia took place yesterday. The theme was “Society, Media and Politics: Rights and Obligations” and according to the Parliament’s own webpage, was “open to any citizen who wanted to participate virtually”. After registering and receiving a password, the participant could watch the events online and send comments which would appear in the Parliament itself.

PodCamp Barcelona had been invited to participate and we duly registered. However it was impossible to see the event in Safari. So, a little annoyed, we changed to FireFox which was crashed by attempting to watch the proceedings. We tried again and again and each time FF crashed.

We tweeted this on Twitter, where we could follow events, and the organisers tweeted back that they were investigating the situation. Meanwhile we received other tweets from people who were watching via FF. So we asked them if they were using Mac or PC, and they were all using PC’s. Meanwhile we fired up an old laptop which has Windows operating inside Ubuntu and lo and behold, in Internet Explorer we could see the event. The only problem is that the laptop has no sound, so we could watch but not listen.

We received another tweet from the organisers to say that they had checked and although the event page didn’t work in Safari, it was working in FireFox. We then tried FF in Ubuntu and it didn’t work there either.

We are explaining the situation in detail because we think that it illustrates very well that the concept of “Open” is still not understood. It is not enough to put an event on “the Internet”. Open means using technology that will function on any operating system and any browser. If the Parliament calls upon citizens to participate they must make sure that they are using Open media – it is bad enough that commercial services such as RENFE have ticketing systems that only function in Internet Explorer, but it is completely unacceptable that the Government uses applications that only function on certain platforms/browsers. While we welcome any initiative to make public authorities more Open, events such as this only demonstrate the gap between the hype and the reality.

Ironically the only way we were able to follow The 8th Parliamentary Day of Audio-Visual Communication Media of the Parliament of Catalonia was via Twitter, an Open Source, cross-platform, cross-browser, web application.
